The SILVER BLADES FIGURE SKATING CLUB is one of the oldest clubs
operating within the ranks of the United States Figure Skating Association. Established on July 25, 1939, the club has been proudly represented by many national competitors.
In the early
forties, gas rationing made it impossible to commute to the rink, and the club
lost its city ice. Our members stayed loyal, and a promoter secured the use of
the tennis courts on the Country Club Plaza. However, with improper equipment
and no way to clean the ice, our members worked together to find the Lakeside
rink some 20 miles away.
Commuting got old and members were loyal but frustrated
until the opening of the King Louie rink in 1966. It was then that the Silver Blades became formally entrenched in its brand new home, the
Ice Chateau. For 24 years, the SBFSC proudly called the convenient skating rink
with the bowling alley, home. Our annual competition and the oldest in the
Midwest, Heart of America, began here. Club ice shows, morning figures, intense
training sessions, and waiting lists for club ice are all cherished memories
that skaters who are now parents of skaters can fondly share and pass on to all
the new members we add each year.
The new millennium brought
new and exciting opportunities for the Silver Blades, who moved into its new home Pepsi Ice Midwest. Unfortunately in early 2011, Ice Midwest chose to change the ice rink into soccer facility, so once again, we lost our ice.
In summer 2011, we joined with the Kansas City Figure Skating Club to share the new and improved Kansas City Ice Center (formerly Ice Sports) as our home rink.
The mission and purpose of the Silver Blades Figure Skating Club of Kansas City is to be a leader in the sport and art of figure skating by challenging each member to achieve one’s highest potential and personal goals. We will accomplish this by:
- Providing a safe, supportive environment for competitive training and excellence.
- Cultivating an atmosphere of mutual respect and social interaction, while promoting good sportsmanship, positive role models and lasting friendships both on and off the ice.
- Inspiring strong qualities of discipline, self confidence and poise that will continue throughout the members’ life.
- Promoting opportunities for community service, leadership, and mentoring of younger members.
The Silver Blades Figure Skating Club of Kansas City is committed to this mission while also carrying out the general policies and objectives of United States Figure Skating and promoting the sport of figure skating in our community.
